My oldest memory of what I wanted to be when I grew up was an artist.
Life had other plans for me of course.
Despite all that I've still carved out some time to create my passion project: Sun & Psyche. This collection of works attempts to communicate how we transmute times of trauma and loss into creative expression.
This project began with the creation of two canvases: each covered in watercolor butterflies and moths. Every flutter was carefully hand painted, outline, cut out, ad pasted onto a canvas over the course of two years. The repetitive and somewhat mindless creative process helped me while my grandparents descended into late stage dementia.
Overall, my works explore the polarity between beauty and darkness through the use of multi-media techniques that reach beyond the canvas. An uncomplicated motif, the butterfly integrates deep meaning with sublime references to the intuitive subconscious and ancient symbolism.
