Honest vulnerable and raw are words that can describe both the sport of climbing and the connections it creates.
Kathy Karlo's "For the Love of Climbing" podcast dives headfirst into topics that will make you cry, grieve, and celebrate this journey we call life.
My Role: Art Direction | Brand Strategy | Orchestrating the Visuals
This project involved creating a cohesive brand identity that spoke to both the raw vulnerability of the podcast's subject matter, as well as the fuzzy feeling it gives you after processing hard topics.
When I first approached Kathy, she and the podcast certainly had an aesthetic (one that involved lots of donuts and was kind of about climbing). However, the brand hadn't found itself yet, and the visuals needed to be distilled, refined.
By the end of our workshop we had found the heart of the podcast, and created a brand that could be communicated clearly and consistently.
1.) Workshopping Brand Vision & Strategy
2.) Creating Mood Board & Color Palettes
3.) Organizing Visual Identity System including: Logo redesign, Illustrations, and Photograph Overlays
4.) Sourcing & Directing Illustration & Artwork
Custom Illustrations communicated this podcast's inner joy... outwardly (that makes sense, right?)
As we worked our way to the heart of the brand, it was clear that the best way to communicate the big feelings in this podcast would be with visuals that make you feel something. So, we sourced the very talented artist Kika Mack to create a set of approachable, heart warming illustrations and motion graphics.
There's so much more to a climbing photo than what's in the picture. To communicate that unspoken depth, we decided to illustrations. Each podcast episode would be brought to life with photographic overlays to show the big feelings below the surface.
The Result: Kathy's podcast is alive and thriving, you can check it out at www.fortheloveofclimbing.com and www.instagram.com/inheadlights
